Summary

In the Prologue, which is narrated in the second-person by a man identified as Jack, Jack describes how his life was ruined on the night he repossessed a $10 million Caravaggio painting from a private collector. Jack was run off the road, beaten, and shot. The painting was stolen. Jack learned the attack had been ordered by his nemesis, Mr. X.

Mr. X ordered another attack one year later when Jack was finally able to work again. Jack handed over the artifact, but Jack was shot anyway. Six months later, Jack received a lead on another stolen artifact, the Wild Heart, a diamond necklace on display in a boutique museum in Chicago. He conducted the required reconnaissance and then waited for the perfect night to take the necklace.
