Summary

As Gail awakens the next day to the cat, she thinks about how Debbie is likely still asleep. She does not envy anyone having to embark on the newlywed journey. Gail thinks her daughter’s childhood reticence to marriage is her own fault because she tore apart her family by sleeping with another man.

She met a man, Andrew Mason, on the first day in 2000 at an old school where they taught. They saw each other on campus at times, and she found herself wishing to make his smile even bigger. Eventually, he introduced himself. Now Gail believes that at the time she was two different people: one who loved Max and one who was attracted to Andrew. She believes that she and Andrew could have eventually been friends instead of lovers.
