Chapters 1-2 Summary

Milo is a private detective in a small to moderate sized city. Milo has lived in this town all his life and is the last remaining survivor of a family whose wealth and influence helped build this town. Milo is now struggling, however, because he will not inherit his trust fund until he is fifty-three and the divorce laws of his state have recently changed in such a way that he no longer has the cases he once depended upon.

In chapter one, Milo is drinking as he watches an accident in the streets below his office window. Milo is worried about his future because the state laws governing divorce have changed the need for his services in proving infidelity.
