Summary

In Chapter 13, Cardan joins the members of the Living Council. Randalin's first comment is that they have to “discuss this offer” (118). Madoc's first response is that they should prepare for war. Citing the fact that Jude tried to warn them that Orlagh was planning something, Madoc asks Jude to weigh in. She reveals that Orlagh has been communicating with Balekin as well. There is a brief conversation of the value of killing Balekin, meaning that Cardan and Oak are the only two heirs to the throne. Cardan sends Jude to get Nicasia. She grates under the command but goes. Cardan tells Nicasia that he will take her prisoner if Orlagh threatens him again, eliminating Jude's worry that he would be tempted to marry Nicasia .Nicasia asks for a chance to talk to Orlagh, but makes it clear she wants to marry Cardan.
