Summary

The narration returns to the past. Matt and Phoebe met at graduate school during a power cut that prevented them from working on their dissertations. When the power came back on, they were enjoying talking to each other so much that they decided to go out for a drink rather than get back to work. After they graduated, Matt quickly landed a tenure-track position. Phoebe found it was easier to help him with his articles than to work on her own. Matt proposed.
