Book 1, Part 2, Chapters 16 - 23 Summary

In Chapter 16, Jake is at first dismayed to find the deli he had been expecting to find has been demolished. He climbs over the fence surrounding the remains of the building. Jake feels there is some sort of power in this lot. Everything in the lot seems to be radiating with some sort of inner glow. There is also a humming sound, like the sound of thousands of voices singing. Jake begins to realize he can see faces in the things that surround him. In Chapter 17, Jake picks up the key. It is the one he has seen in his dreams. He approaches the rose, which opens to display a blazing yellow light. Jake begins to get the feeling that there is something about to go terribly wrong. He feels a need to protect the rose.
