Chapter 9: Exile 1980-1982 Summary

Jackie, 1980

Rachel is buried where she had wanted to be laid to rest—back in Homeplace. Dillon is the first to arrive and the last to leave. Jackie can't bear to watch him. Jackie earns a degree in journalism and spends a year in England. She takes a job working for a congressman in Washington, D.C. At President Reagan's parade, she runs into a priest—it 's Tom. Tom is running the Cervantes Center, a place that helps the poor and underprivileged. They have a few beers and Jackie feels a little giddy. She makes a weak pass at Tom which he rebuffs. He offers her a job at the Cervantes Center. She'd have to take a pay cut but she could live rent-free in the housing at the center.

Jackie takes the job and sells...
