Chapter 6: The Roving Pickets 1962 Summary

Jackie

Jackie and Rachel move into their new house near the Number Thirteen mine. It is a house in which a doctor had lived. Dillon sleeps in a basement bedroom sometimes. A thirteen-year-old boy with rotten teeth named Toejam Day lives at the Number Thirteen mine community, too. Toejam is not very bright. Jackie helps him deliver newspapers on his route. Jackie loves to read and write but fears she isn't very good at writing. Jackie worries when Rachel is late getting home—always fearing that she is dead. Jackie decides that a girl, Brenda, in her class needs saving. She feels uncomfortable but finally musters up the courage to ask her if she wants to go to church. When Brenda says, "Not really," Jackie figures she has tried and gives up her missionary work.
