Summary

Apollo tells the reader that he believes bodies should always be laid to rest in their home, something that some gods and mortals do not always agree with. That is why he and Meg are escorting Jason Grace to Camp Jupiter in a hearse courtesy of their friend, Piper. The plan is to go to Mount Tamalpais, the Seat of Titans, but Apollo feels a strange evil of ancient enemies in Oakland. He mentions the Burning Maze from the last book, and how three ancient emperors - also known as the Triumvirate - want to control all sources of prophecy. As Apollo drives toward Caldecott Tunnel, a ghoul lands on the roof and tears through it. When Meg tells Apollo to swerve, he is forced to obey and launches into a canyon.
