Chapters 15-16 Summary

Becky tells Adelaide of the events that have taken place and how Price Leopold is alive. Adelaide's kitten, which was eating from her breakfast tray, began twitching and died. Countess Thalgau bursts into the room and removes the breakfast tray. She is crying and says she learned of the plot from her husband and that they won't let Adelaide sign the treaty. The Countess says that she is ashamed of her husband and supports Adelaide.

A knock at the door reveals Godel and a squad of soldiers. Godel wants the Countess to go to her sick husband but she refuses then finally agrees. She leaves the room with two soldiers. Godel orders the soldiers to take Becky and Adelaide to the castle. They leave in the carriage. Becky has the pistol that Jim gave her.
