Summary

Chapter 44 opens with an excerpt from the final Kiel Gnomenfoot book. Kiel is now in the story, and Dr. Verity is about to use Owen's heart to open the vault. Owen and Bethany are reading the book together and they cringe at the puns and jokes. Dr. Verity says he has built a fail safe into the robotic heart, and will blow it up if Kiel does magic. Owen panics, pointing out that he actually has the robotic heart. Bethany suggests Dr. Verity will not blow up the heart, but Owen feels certain he will. Dr. Verity begins using the keys, one by one. Kiel uses magic to free himself. Dr. Verity pushes the button, but Owen's heart does not explode.

Kiel and Dr. Verity fight briefly. Kiel then points out that the heart Dr. Verity is holding was not given selflessly...
