Summary

In the opening of Chapter 1, Lucy Hagen and Brynn Jamison were sitting in traffic on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Lucy feared bridges and avoided them whenever possible. To make matters worse, Lucy glimpsed a person wearing a creepy mask in a car near them. Brynn suggested that Lucy should talk to the psychiatrist that Brynn was seeing about her phobia. She also tried to distract Lucy from her fear by getting her to sing along with the radio.

Another slower song by Carole King came on the radio and Lucy told Brynn the singing helped distract her. Brynn, however, was gripping the steering wheel with her eyes wide open. Brynn screamed and began clawing the skin on her arms and face before running to the railing of the bridge. Other people tried to help Lucy get Brynn off the railing but were...
