Summary

Chapter 1 begins in 1946 as Grace Healey, a woman living in New York City, rushes to work the morning after spending the night with a man named Mark. She intended to cross 43rd Street but found it blocked due to an accident. She went into Grand Central Station to cut across despite disliking the place ever since her husband Tom was killed in a jeep accident and failed to arrive on his train back to New York. In the station, she found a brown suitcase with the name Trigg written in chalk upon it. Upon opening it, she found a packet of a dozen or so photos of young women, some in military uniforms. Hearing police sirens and unable to get the photos back in the envelope they came in, she tucked the photos into her own bag and continued on to work.
