Summary

In Chapter 21, the fight that began with Frank, Emmett, and just a few people grows quickly. More Blacks arrive, and whites rush out of the nearby amusement park. Springlake is a privately owned business, meaning the owners set their own rules. There was not a day set aside for Black patrons. Some of the Black men leave the fight as police arrive, jumping the turnstiles into the park. Grady notes that he knows this because of newspaper accounts later. From his position in the car, he can only see the fight involving Frank and Emmett. Grady gets a glimpse of Frank and Emmett with their bloody faces and torn clothes just as someone hits Emmett, driving him to the ground. Grady leaps from the car and rushes into the fight.
