Summary

In Chapter 16, Big Dan offers to take the boys to the Place the following morning. Babi predicts the leopard was frightened of the storm. Big Dan says officials have left “doctored horse meat” for the leopard. He explains that it has a sedative in it that will put the leopard to sleep if he eats it. Bethie reveals that neither Frank nor Emmett is up yet, and she asks Big Dan for a ride to work. Big Dan goes to the apartment but returns without either Frank or Emmett. They drop Bethie and Vivian at their respective jobs. Grady hears several of Vivian's coworkers making a fuss over Grady and Danny. Big Dan tells Danny and Grady that his life might have been very different if he had not contracted the flu in 1918, which prevented him from shipping out to fight overseas. He...
