Summary
The Last Wolf is told in one unbroken sentence, almost entirely from the perspective of a German academic, who recounts the story of his recent visit to Extremadura in Spain to a bored and uninterested Hungarian barman in Berlin.
The novel starts with the protagonist arriving at a bar called the Sparschwein in Berlin in the morning. His pint of Sternburg beer was already waiting for him when he arrived. On his way, he reflected on the feelings of futility and scorn that defined his worldview. The man felt disconcerted by a letter he had received from a foundation inviting him to the Spanish region of Extremadura, all expenses paid, in order to write something about the area. The man felt that the invitation must have been a mistake and that no one could plausibly be suggesting they would pay him to do...
