Satantango Overview
Satantango is a novel by Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai. The story takes place in an unnamed Hungarian village in the 1980s. The village used to be part of a Soviet-run collectivist estate, until the estate was dissolved by the Soviet government. The village has sunk into increasingly deep poverty since then, and the panicked villagers become increasingly desperate as they attempt to discern the best courses of action for themselves. The novel explores themes such as community, isolation, uncertainty, and interpersonal attachment.
