Summary

Part 6: Chapter 1 opens in Villon in the year 1914. Addie is horrified to see that Estele’s tree has been felled by lightning. When Luc appears, he denies having anything to do with it, stating that nature can be cruel as well. He takes her to Paris, and they share a drink. Luc finally admits to being lonely. He gives her back her wooden ring, to be used to summon him. Addie is determined to never use it. Luc tells her a war is coming and offers to take her out of Europe. She declines, but a week later, she flees on a ship to New York.

In Chapter 2, it is the 300th anniversary of Addie’s deal with Luc. Addie and Henry spend the day at the beach, and each says “I love...
