Point of View

The novel is narrated in the first-person present by Deka, who is the protagonist of the novel. Deka is a 16-year-old girl who grew up in a small town in the North. Because of this, her view of the world is quite narrow. While her mother was from the South, and did share some facts with Deka, she was also quite secretive and kept much of her former life in the South a secret from Deka. Deka is therefore completely unaware that there is anything special about her, and so is the reader.

Deka’s limited knowledge of herself and her world enables the reader to experience information at the same time as Deka. When Deka learns that she is a demon descended from the Gilded Ones, four ancient demons who once plagued mankind, the reader also learns this information. And, like Deka, the reader...
