Summary

In Chapter 22, Yona leads the way into the swamp, berating Jerusza for not making her pay more attention on their previous trip here. Yona feels good about several members of her group she believes can help protect them. She thinks about her conversation with Zus, hating that she had not said everything she felt. Chaim spends time with Yona. He tells her about Zus's wife and daughter. Zus was respected in his community, which may be why the Germans targeted him. They tied Zus to a stove, then beat and murdered his wife and daughter as Zus begged for their lives. Chaim managed to get away from his work detail five days later and release Zus, who was still tied to the stove. Chaim says the experience broke Zus.
