Summary

In Chapter 5, Yona continues to care for six-year-old Chana for two days. Chana relates the horrors she has faced at the hands of Germans. Yona cries only when Chana sleeps. Yona remembers that Jerusza called Yona's parents evil, she fears they are among the Germans perpetuating these atrocities. Chana describes being separated from her parents when they were escaping a Jewish ghetto. Yona and Chana find Chana's parents, Isaac and Esta. Isaac has been shot and Yona uses all her knowledge to tend the wound. Eight days pass before Isaac begins to recover. He and Yona often talk quietly together about the situation. Isaac recounts the random killing of Jews, often hundreds at a time, with plans to kill more. He talks about the cruelty of the soldiers as they murder Jews, including mothers and babies.
