Chapters 28-30 Summary

Chapter 29

Sol and Father Dure spend an uneventful night in philosophical and theological musings. The following morning, Het Masteen awakes and cries out that he was supposed to use the erg to power the Tree of Pain during the time of atonement. Het Masteen dies and Sol and Father Dure are unable to revive him.

Dure takes a walk alone and finds a light emanating from one of the Cave Tombs and enters. Sol Weintraub awakens later in the afternoon, sure that he is being watched. Dure has not returned. Sol takes Rachel with him as he walks through the valley, but there is no sign of Dure. When he returns to the Sphinx, Sol finds that Brawne Lamia has disappeared along with the silvery cord that connected her to the Tomb.

Chapter 30

That night, Sol dreams again the recurring dream...
