Summary
In Part 4, “Spring,” Chapter 20, Hai returns home from work one night to find Grazina missing. Panicked, he calls Lucas, who reveals that Grazina fell and was taken to a rehabilitation center. Hai visits her in the nursing home rehab ward. As she drifts in and out of lucidity, Hai finds himself telling her about Noah. They were close when they were young. They spent summers running through the tobacco fields at night or talking in the park. Hai always felt okay when they were together. When Grazina drifts out, Hai tells her he is “a horrible son” (318).
Outside afterwards, Hai cries and shouts to Noah and his grandmother. A security guard tells him to leave. Hai recovers himself, but he is still overcome by grief. He calls Sony and asks to hang out. They spend the evening watching Sony’s favorite war movies...
