Summary

In Part 3, “Winter,” Chapter 15, one night at HomeMarket, Hai and his co-workers gather to hear BJ perform her entrance song. Afterwards, Hai and Sony visit Bryon’s Insta-Bail. Hai took the $4,000 from Grazina. With the $1,200 Sony saved, they can make Aunt Kim’s bail. At the last minute, however, Hai pretends he only has half his amount. Outside afterwards, he apologizes to Sony for being bad at math. Sitting on the curb, Sony admits he feels “Like a loser” (229). Hai assures him he is as normal as anyone.

In Chapter 16, on Christmas Eve, Grazina makes a fish casserole and insists that she and Hai must visit her son Lucas. Hai is unconvinced that Lucas is real or that the visit is planned. They take a car to “a gated community called Colonial Green” anyway (237). He is shocked when a man opens the door...
