Summary

Chapter 20 begins from Marian’s perspective after the events of Chapter 19. She gives her acceptance speech for her award when she notices Hugh standing in the back. He waits for her after the ceremony. They have a strained exchange before he tells Marian that she owes him a conversation. Marian reluctantly agrees. After parsing their last meeting in 1941, both of them become confused. Hugh is upset that Marian never came to the station, but she insists she sent a note, prompting Hugh to ask why she chose Teddy over him, confusing Marian further. He refers to the note she wrote him, but Marian is baffled, asking “What are you talking about?” (375). Hugh pulls out the note, which Marian recognizes as the letter she wrote to Teddy.
