Summary

In Chapter 15, Ethan and Ashlyn had tea with Marian. Marian spoke of Ethan’s father, Richard (whom she called Dickey), and how Hemi used him as a messenger. Marian, irritated once she mentioned Hemi, said “He called me Belle, but there was no Belle. Certainly not the one he wrote about” (312). Upon hearing this, Ashlyn believed that she was correct in her assumption that information was missing from Hemi and Belle’s story. Marian then explained how the books ended up with Ethan’s father: After Hemi and Belle (Marian) wrote the books, Marian and Dickey argued because he believed that she was being unfair to Hemi. Dickey orchestrated a surprise meeting between Marian and Hemi, but she discovered it beforehand and did not go, causing a rift between them.
