Summary

Chapter 9 returns to 1984. Ashlyn drove to Ethan’s house to ask him to reread the books, hoping he could answer more questions about Hemi and Belle. When he did not answer his door, Ashlyn tried to leave the books with a note attached. Ethan opened the door as she did so and asked why she was intruding. Ashlyn apologized and turned to leave, but Ethan explained that he had turned off his phone to work. He invited her inside, and Ashlyn accepted, asking him to look at her notes. He opened some wine to discuss the novels with her.

In Chapter 10, Ashlyn summarized her theories that Goldie and Hemi were romantically involved and that Hemi was journalist Steven Schwab. She asked Ethan if Martin Manning, his great-grandfather, had a history of criminal behavior. Ethan knew about a scandal, but nothing about Nazi sympathizing...
