Summary

In Chapter One, Clover says she watched her kindergarten teacher die when she was five. The other students panicked, but Clover held his hand as he passed. Afterward, her somewhat neglectful parents shrugged the incident off, claiming Clover was just odd.

Chapter Two continues 31-years later as Clover realizes she has watched 97 people die. As an experienced death doula, she can sense when death is close and works to give people a companion once they find it. Her most recent patient, Guillermo, was lonely and bitter. Yet, Clover gave him the space and comfort she gives everyone, feeling that it is an honor to share these moments, even when it is difficult.
