Summary

In Chapter 24, Maude Ivory addresses the approaching man as Billy Taupe. When the members of the Covey make it clear he is not welcome, he pushes a Peacekeeper and a fight breaks out. Peacekeepers hold Mayfair home after the fight. Coriolanus and Sejanus are ordered to escort her home for her own safety. Coriolanus does not see Lucy Gray again. Sejanus had asked questions and knows that the members of the Covey live in an area called the Seam near the forest. Coriolanus begins to feel this is a failed effort when they hear Maude Ivory singing. Maude Ivory leads Sejanus and Coriolanus to the meadow where Lucy Gray is working on a new song. Sejanus then encourages Maude Ivory back to the house, leaving Coriolanus to greet Lucy Gray alone. Lucy Gray is singing a song about meeting at “the hanging tree...
