The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes Overview

Suzanne Collins's young adult novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the prequel to The Hunger Games series. In this installment, Collins introduces Coriolanus Snow as a young man struggling to claim his rightful place in the Capitol. Coriolanus and eleven other students are chosen to be the first mentors in the Hunger Games in the hope of increasing interest in the event. Things go wrong as Coriolanus discovers he is willing to do anything to ensure his tribute wins, putting Coriolanus on the path toward becoming Panem's President Snow. The novel's main themes are the effects of war, manipulation, displacement, power, and a person's natural brutality.
