Summary

Part I is titled The Mentor. Chapter 1 opens with Coriolanus Snow cooking some cabbage. He hates cabbage but wants to be sure his stomach does not growl while he is at the reaping. He is 18 years old; his parents are deceased. He lives in the penthouse apartment with his cousin Tigris and the Grandma'am. Coriolanus does not have a shirt suitable for the reaping. Since Tigris is a skilled seamstress, Coriolanus hopes she is able to produce something for him to wear. The family is very poor, still reeling from the effects of the war. Coriolanus has no idea what Tigris might have to do to get him a shirt. He knows she might seek help from her employer, Fabricia Whatnot.
