Chapter 35 Summary

There is still no word from Culum at sunset. He had been invited to a ball at the governor's palace that evening but he said he didn't know if he could attend. Dirk finds that Culum had been drinking heavily at the gaming club. He is mad at his son for his stupid behavior. A sedan chair is deposited in front of his house by two coolies, who disappear. A drunken, unconscious Culum is in the chair. Dirk carries him into the house. Culum had been robbed. They bathe him and put him to bed. Dirk leaves him in the care of Lo Chum with orders to send word when Culum awakes. He goes to May-may's.

The next morning he finds that Culum still has not awakened. He notifies the Brock family that Culum has been found and tries to concentrate on work...
