Chapter 12, Flower in a Crannied Wall Summary

The character of Joe Elegant is introduced in this chapter. He is the bear Flag cook who also helps the girls when they need it. One morning Suzy finds herself alone with Joe and tries to make conversation with him. As much as Suzy tries to be nice to him, he responds coldly and Suzy loses her temper and grabs him by the collar but catches herself before she goes any farther. Suzy quickly apologizes for her actions and Joe apologizes explaining that he doesn't really belong there. He tells her that he is writing a novel offering to let Suzy come by sometime and read it to try and be nice.
