Chapter 9, Whom the Gods Love They Drive Nuts Summary

This chapter starts by describing how much the Cannery Row depends on Doc. Because everyone loves him, everyone is concerned with him and worried about him. As Doc continues to keep writing his paper her keeps hearing his top voice screaming "Write!" his middle voice screaming "Search" and his lowest voice saying "Lonesome! Lonesome!". Doc's octopi die one by one and he can't use the excuse that he doesn't have the right microscope anymore. All of Doc's friends coincidentally, meet at the flophouse and discuss Doc's situation.
