Chicago serves as a backdrop for the novel although the characters' focus is turned more inward, minimizing the role of the city. Chicago is also a source of disappointment and confusion for the characters who have not been able to move on with their lives. For example, Irene's return home represents a failure of independence from her family and a lack of financial stability.

Mitzi's Tavern is one of the central locations in the novel, taking on an almost mythic quality due to Matty's frequent out of body trips to this location. This location also travels through time during the characters' recollections of the past. Teddy feels most uncomfortable and distressed in this location because it represents his failings as a father to protect his sons from making his same mistakes and getting involved with the mob.
