Summary

Frankie and Loretta buy a new house together but Frankie refuses to put his name on the lease, wanting the house to belong only to his wife. While the family drives back to their old house, after repurchasing it, Frankie takes a stop along the way. He shows Loretta a warehouse-like building and pitches the idea for a pinball alley. Loretta tells him to forget it.

Irene is packing her belongings to fly back to Arizona to visit Josh. Irene hopes that Buddy is happy now without his psychic abilities, “walking around in the dark like everyone else now” (387).

Teddy receives another letter from Maureen in which she writes that she is afraid what Buddy meant when he said he would never see past September. She also says that she has been sneaking home to watch the children because she knows her body...
