Summary

In Chapter 37, Mikami watched Futawatari walking and called out to him. He wondered whether Futawatari was visiting Akama, Captain Tsujiuchi, Arakida, or another police official who lived nearby. Futawatari continued to approach Mikami in silence, avoiding eye contact. Mikami began following him. Futawatari’s sedan was visible ahead. Mikami repetitively asked what Futawatari was doing out but was basically ignored. Mikami then announced that he knew what was in the Koda memo. Futawatari did not stop walking. Mikami then asked what Futawatari “intended to do to Criminal Investigations” (257). Again, Futawatari did not answer. He reached for his car door. Mikami told him to wait and moved between Futawatari and his car. They bickered. Mikami asked what the commissioner was planning to say. Again, Futawatari refused to give Mikami a real answer.
