Hillary Rodham

Hillary Rodham is the main protagonist of the novel, and the novel is told from her first person perspective. Sittenfeld creates a particular perspective and voice for Hillary to give the reader the feeling that they are reading her memoir, in an alternate universe though the reader does not know the outcome until the very end of the novel when they discover she is now president. Hillary often looks back on particular stories or moments from her past, narrating them with her own retrospective thoughts. She sprinkles in random memories as the book progresses, at first remembering moments of sexism from her childhood, then later sexism on the campaign trail. She also narrates Hillary’s voice and perspective to be thoughtful and extremely careful, showing even the detail of how she edits texts.
