Summary

At the end of page 40, after the line break, Hillary realizes that she and Bill have been together for three hours and she does not have enough time now to make cookies for the Greenbergers’ potluck. She arrives at the Greenbergers, and Gwen tells her she found an apartment for Hillary to sublet that summer in Berkeley. Richard, her husband, had found Hillary a clerkship with a firm in San Francisco that summer. Hillary tells Gwen she thinks she is in love, and tells Gwen about Bill and how he kissed her on the neck. Hillary overhears her classmates at the party talking about a controversy involving a professor’s support of the Black Panthers. Hillary thinks about how Bill had not asked her out again, but after the chemistry they had they must have a mutual interest in each other.
