Summary
The twelfth story is called “Playing With Fire”. The narrator recalls that her aunt Hortensia was born with healing powers. Their neighbor, Dona Juana, discovered that licking the infant’s feet could bring about healing and miracles. When Hortensia grew up she taught the narrator how to be a bruja (witch). The narrator became a successful bruja with a large following on Facebook. Her troubles began when a woman named Teresa moved in next door with her pet dogs who were always defecating in the narrator’s yard. Teresa apologized and cleaned up the mess whenever it happened but insisted it wasn’t her responsibility to build a wall between their houses. The narrator attempted every spell and curse she knew in order to harm Teresa but nothing ever worked, which was very surprising to the narrator who was confident...
