Summary
The sixth story is called “La China” and is narrated by La China, the woman who becomes Yuliana’s bodyguard. La China recalls being in prison for arranging the murder of her abusive ex-husband. One day a man named Cruz Negra, who La China refers to as El Comandante, visited the prison and took several female prisoners away to work for him. La China was taken to a compound and underwent military style training to work for El Comandante’s cartel. She started out with boring work guarding marijuana fields but gradually moved up the ranks. She was asked to kill people and claims in the narration that she feels no remorse for the murders she committed. She has a daughter, Julieta, who lives with her mom. She is pleased that the money she makes mean her mother...
