Hawaii

At the outset of the novel, Lux is living in Hawaii. While the Pacific Island seems idyllic, she feels trapped in Maui. She believed that she and Nico would only stay on the island for a short time before sailing around the world. However, she is stuck working at a hotel to pay rent. As the novel progresses, Lux continually fears returning to Hawaii and facing the monotonous life she led before the trip to Meroe Island. Her violent actions, in Chapter twenty nine, are partially motivated by her desire to avoid the feelings of entrapment and dependency she felt in Maui.

Meroe Island
