Summary

In the Prologue, an unnamed character is drowning in the ocean. She can taste the salt water and her own blood as she struggles to stay afloat. Lux is working at the Haleakala Resort in Maui in Chapter 1. The narrator had moved to Hawaii for her boyfriend, Nico Johannsen, several months before. While she chastises herself for uprooting her life for a man, he offered her “a chance to travel, to sail around the world, to finally have some experiences” (9). However, Nico’s boat, the Susannah, is damaged and he didn’t have the funds to repair it. He refuses to call his parents, who are wealthy, and Lux is left working at the hotel to pay their rent. As she cleans a room, the guests overhear her snide remarks about their sex toys and the manager fires her immediately.
