Summary

Chapter 6. As Queenie prepares a proposal for an article she wants to write about racism – “Racial tension: U.S. or us?” (83), she is interrupted by an email from Darcy, who points out the attractive new American intern. Queenie does not find him particularly appealing, and sends the editor (Gina) her proposal. She then visits Darcy at her desk, who inadvertently makes a comment about race that makes Queenie wish, in narration, that “well-meaning white liberals would think before they said things that they thought were perfectly innocent” (85). She goes for a cigarette to calm herself, and has another flirty conversation with Ted, mentioning in passing that she lost a scarf when she went to the fireworks. When the conversation gets a little too flirty she backs off, telling herself that she should not get involved with him, and reminding herself of that...
