Chapter Ten Summary
An Eskimo Indian legend of a woman who was enchanted by a bird disguised as a man precedes this chapter. A beautiful woman is promised comfort, but eventually realizes that her living conditions are very painful. When she tries to escape the petrel in her father's boat, the petrel causes a storm so powerful even her father must throw her overboard.
Cassie admits that when she was five and Connor moved in next door she planned to be a boy, her mother having trained her to be a proper young lady. Connor inspired her to become an archeologist, and his spirit visits her at important times in her life.
