Summary

The next scene picks up the following weekend as Mrs. Lin prepares to leave. She asks Feng-Li to intervene when Ke-Gang and Jia-Xi fight. This provides a lighthearted moment between them. The next scene takes place in March. Jia-Xi is calling out “Breakfast. She looks down to see charred food in the pan. Ke-Gang says Jia-Xi needs to learn to cook. Feng-Li argues that she wants cereal. Jia-Xi urges her to hurry. She provides three bagged lunches as Feng-Li and Ke-Gang rush out the door. Jia-Xi looks exhausted. Ke-Gang watches as Feng-Li gets on her bus. He tells Olivia he wonders “how my sister handles being alone at school” (64). Olivia seems pleased when Ke-Gang says he has Olivia and Jia-Xi. A boy named Simon makes fun of Jia-Xi for carrying an umbrella. Ke-Gang pretends to know martial arts, and Simon makes an excuse...
