Summary

In the Prologue, a news report from the BBC News website reports that four Britons were killed and two hospitalized after avalanches left a remote ski chalet cut off from electricity and cell phone service. It is stated that three survivors hiked from this “house of horror” (5) three miles to radio for help. The deaths are being investigated as murders.

Chapter 1, which is set five days earlier, is narrated by Liz. Her narration is preceded by her Snoop identification and the song to which she is listening. She has no snoops and no snoopscribers.

Liz is listening to music in an attempt to ignore the attention that Eva and Topher are giving her. She asks herself why she came on the ski trip even though she knows it is because she could not afford not to.
