Summary

The novel is written in the first person from the perspective of the protagonist: antique book dealer Tara Selter. She lies in a room in a house and listens to the sounds being made elsewhere in the house by a man named Thomas. She knows his routines and patterns by heart and knows precisely what he is doing at every moment of the day, which room he will be in when, and when he will go out. While Thomas is out, Tara takes the opportunity to leave the guest room where she has been listening to his movements. She uses the bathroom, gets a glass of water from the kitchen, and returns to her room before Thomas gets back to the house.
