Summary
Scene Thirteen takes place in Ty Trist mine in Wales in 1907 when Nye was ten years old. Nye’s father David teaches Nye about coal mining. He tells him that an inexperienced miner just hacks away at the coal in a random manner and is overall ineffective because of it. He says that a talented miner examines the coal face until he can see the point where one blow will bring the whole thing down.
Scene Fourteen takes place in the Houses of Parliament tearooms in 1941. Winston Churchill approaches Nye for a conversation. Nye points out that he has been Churchill’s only critic during the war and Churchill points out that this criticism has made Nye extremely unpopular with the public, as well as isolating him from his own party.
