Summary
Scene Seven takes place in the Houses of Parliament in 1929 when Nye was 32 years old. Jennie gives her maiden speech as an MP, criticizing the budget. Nye cheers. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain responds, defending his government’s plans. Nye makes interjections criticizing Chamberlain’s stance in stark and uncompromising terms that the other MPs find offensive and demand he withdraws his comments. Nye refuses and argues that the rest of the house does not understand the life of ordinary people in Britain because, unlike Nye, they have all grown up in lives of immense privilege. Nye threatens to punch the Conservative politicians Chamberlain and Winston Churchill. Nye becomes increasingly irate and politicians on his own side attempt to calm him down. Everyone walks out as Nye continues to rant and rave against the system before he eventually realizes that he is...
